About Us

Recognised as an international leader in research, the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute is changing the face of research into neurological diseases, not just in Australia, but around the world. Our eminent neuroscientists, clinicians and outstanding research leaders relate laboratory-based research to clinical research involving patients to ensure that our discoveries are translated into health benefits for people as soon as possible.

Our goal is to prevent and, ultimately, find cures for diseases and life threatening disabilities.

This work is crucial because, in Australia, in one year alone:
   • Over 3 million Australians experience one or more episodes of major brain disorder
   • 6,000 new patients are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, some as young as 30 years old
   • Over 60,000 in total have Parkinson’s disease
   • Over 200,000 have Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia
   • Over 20,000 are in wheelchairs from spinal cord injuries
   • Some 300 suffer spinal injury causing paraplegia or quadriplegia
   • Over 800,000 people suffer from depression
   • 2000 are newly diagnosed with Schizophrenia

The Institute is recognised for its exceptional research in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementias; psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression; spinal cord and child injury; disease and injury of the nervous system such as Motor Neurone; stroke, falls in the elderly, balance and vision, human movement, sleep apnoea and chronic pain.

Our single passion is to understand how the brain and nervous system work and discover how to conquer these conditions through prevention, treatment and cure. The solutions will only be found through medical research. Research provides the power to cure.

The Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute relies on the generosity of the community to enhance its vital research. All donations, whether large or small, are important. How you can support our research...

Situated on the Prince of Wales Hospital campus, adjacent to the University of New South Wales Medical School, our five areas of research include:
