Appointed Institute head in 2004, Prof Schofield graduated from the University of Sydney with the University Medal and was awarded a PhD in genetics from The Australian National University in 1985. He undertook postdoctoral positions in biotechnology in the US and the University of Heidelberg and was appointed a NHMRC Senior Research Fellow at the Garvan Institute becoming head of the Neurobiology Research Program. His research interests focus on identifying genes that lead to mental illness and to dementia.

Professor Gandevia is one of four Founding Scientists of the Institute; Founding Member of the Governing Board of Mayne Clinical Research Imaging Centre, POWMRI; Co-Director of the Spinal Injuries Research Centre, POWMRI; Conjoint Professor at UNSW; and Clinical Neurophysiologist at PHH/POWH. He undertakes innovative studies in integrative human neuroscience. Currently he is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Physiology.
