Appointed Institute head in 2004, Prof Schofield graduated from the University of Sydney with the University Medal and was awarded a PhD in genetics from The Australian National University in 1985. He undertook postdoctoral positions in biotechnology in the US and the University of Heidelberg and was appointed a NHMRC Senior Research Fellow at the Garvan Institute becoming head of the Neurobiology Research Program. His research interests focus on identifying genes that lead to mental illness and to dementia.![]()
Professor Simon Gandevia

Professor Gandevia is one of four Founding Scientists of the Institute; Founding Member of the Governing Board of Mayne Clinical Research Imaging Centre, POWMRI; Co-Director of the Spinal Injuries Research Centre, POWMRI; Conjoint Professor at UNSW; and Clinical Neurophysiologist at PHH/POWH. He undertakes innovative studies in integrative human neuroscience. Currently he is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Physiology.
