Supplementary Research Scholarships for Studies of Spinal Cord Injury

Research is being conducted in the Spinal Injuries Research Centre at the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute (supported by the NSW Spinal Cord Injury and Related Neurological Conditions Research Grants Program) into changes in nerves and muscles below the level of a spinal cord injury. The aim is to identify the mechanisms underlying atrophy and modified excitability so that improved rehabilitation programs can be developed.

Senior Research Officer

 

The Human Tissue Resource Centre (HTRC) is a facility that collects, characterises and stores human tissue samples (brain and spinal cord, DNA, serum and cells) for use in neuroscience research in Australia and overseas. We are seeking a motivated person with an interest in neuroscience and tissue banking to manage and develop the HTRC.  This position will be responsible for the overseeing of daily operations of the HTRC and its personnel. The initial appointment is for a duration of five years.

 

Duties include: the supervision of HTRC staff; quality assurance of laboratory processes; financial management of the facility; ensuring ethical and legal criteria are met; collection of human tissues; performing case characterization; publicising the HTRC through written reports and public speaking.

 

Essential criteria: a medical degree or PhD with relevant knowledge and experience in handling of human tissue specimens; well developed organisational and communication skills; demonstrated managerial skills and successful team work.

 

Desirable criteria: knowledge of tissue banking procedures, research experience.
